How To Make your Lathe Bigger - Page 2

Bigger and Now Longer:

Phase 2 for the old Delta Homecraft 11" lathe is a longer riser that provides full 60" spindle turning.

Phase 3 for the old lathe is retirement. Replaced with an older 12" by 24" Powermatic Lathe. This lathe came from a high school, probably the result of the termination of an vocational arts program.

The Powermatic lathe has been changed from the original 1 hp 3 phase motor to a temporary ¾ hp single phase motor. Eventually to be upgraded to a 2 hp single phase motor. To make the single phase motor fit, a "jack shaft" had to be installed between the motor and the headstock shaft. This is a Powermatic original equipment option, although the one use was homemade. The motor and "jack shaft" have 4 step pulleys to add greater range of speeds available.

Also risers have been added to change the lathe from the original 12" by 24" to 18" by 48". Riser fabrication follows the same procedure as for the Delta Homecraft Lathe. The measurements for the riser are specific for the Powermatic Lathe. 8" channel with ½" flat stock welded to the top of the channel sides.

The result of the Powermatic Lathe modification is One Great Lathe! The addition of homemade faceplates, a Vicmarc chuck with jaws to 16" and the best chuck of all, a Grizzly 3 jaw with modified jaws (explained on next page) for bowl gripping make this a really wonderful lathe.
